The Opava Opera is presenting a new production of the opera Rigoletto from February 20, where Lucie Kaňková will play the main female role – Rigoletto’s daughter Gilda, adding another Verdi heroine to her singing repertoire.

“The singing part of Gilda really suits me,” says Lucie Kaňková, whose coloratura soprano voice has already introduced her to the Mozart and bel canto repertoire. “Among Verdi’s heroines, I have particularly enjoyed Violetta Valéry from La Traviata, which I have sung, for example, in a live broadcast on Moldovan television. Gilda, like Violetta, naturally develops over the course of the opera – from a pure, innocent girl to a woman who encounters the harsh reality of life, from which her father protected her. This is of course also reflected in the character of the singing, from lyrical coloraturas to quite dramatic moments.”

In addition to the Italian libretto and preparation for Rigoletto, Lucie Kaňková is also diligently studying French. In just a few days, she will be leaving for Liège, Belgium, for several months. After auditioning, she was invited there by Italian conductor Spenranza Scapucci to cover the roles of Philine from Thomas Mignon’s Amboise opera and Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni. “It’s an honor for me because really big stars are performing here, for example singers we know from cinema broadcasts from the MET or Covent Garden. The role of Philine is not only a very demanding coloratura task, but also contains many passages in French prose,” says the soprano. “And since it will be a production in front of native speakers, all the words have to sound really perfect and convincing. I see it as a great school that will come in handy later. I have already been promised other roles in the next season and the one after that, and I look forward to someone else covering for me,” laughs Lucie Kaňková.
